With the joy of having a new born also comes many new changes in your life. Your thoughts turn towards looking after your baby, leaving you with limited time to look after yourself. So why would you think about starting a Pilates program at this time?

Pregnancy has brought about a lot of changes in your body. Your posture has adapted, your joints are more flexible and with this your core strength involving your glutes, abdominals and pelvic floor muscles have decreased in strength. Regaining your strength and improving your posture is important now to avoid risk of injury later on down the track. With all the extra lifting you will be doing now, your body will thank you for giving it a little time each week devoted to exercise.

Why Pilates?

Pilates is a safe form of exercise which can be modified to suit your body’s strength and requirements. Two major points of focus for a postnatal mother is pelvic floor strength and transverse abdominal activation (major factors in your core strength). They have both been effected during pregnancy, regardless of whether you have had a vaginal delivery or a caesarian section. Pilates exercises focus on these areas from the start and slowly build up the intensity as you strengthen. This means you are safely returning to your pre-pregnancy form without putting your lower back and joints at risk.

Alison at AMS Pilates is experienced with teaching mothers after both vaginal delivery and caesarian sections. Recovery and strength will be different depending on the type of delivery you had so it’s important your exercise afterwards is adapted for that. Whether you are looking for private Pilates training or wanting to join a mat class, you will be looked after and given the complete attention you need to make sure your workout is helping not harming the body.

It’s considered safe to start your pilates program 6 weeks after vaginal delivery and 10 weeks after caesarian section, however, it is best to get clearance from your GP or medical practitioner before embarking on a new exercise program.
